The Kenya Union Of Clinical Officers has given the government a 44-day ultimatum to renew the contracts for 9,000 universal health healthcare workers failure to which they will down their tools.

The clinical officers are also demanding salary arrears pending for three months.

Led by their chairperson Peterson Wachira, the health workers also want the Ministry of Health to post interns who just concluded their training.

"The UHC contracts, they are about 9000 UHC contracted health workers of different professionals, about half of them their contract came to an end on 19th and they have also left the workplace compounding the crisis that we are having in hospitals because the ministry has not been able to communicate on the renewal of their contracts as been agreed upon during the summit meeting in Naivasha," said Wachira.

KUCO Secretary General George Gibore on his part called for the fulfilment of an agreement by President Ruto in February this year where he said the contracts would be extended.

The union officials consequently threatened to storm ministry headquarters at Afya House on Monday should the ministry fail to meet their demands.

"These workers are in anxiety and confusion; they do not know whether to continue working despite the presidential declaration around February this year that they would extend their contract," he said.

"We have been engaging them through the diplomatic approach and we are saying that starting Monday next week, they will be coming to ask for their appointment letters at the MoH.”
