Clerics ask Azimio to give gov’t grace period to settle down, say ‘too early for mass action’
Religious leaders from
the Rift Valley region have said it is too early for the
opposition to engage in protests.
This is ahead of Monday’s
demonstration led by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition, seeking to pressure
President William Ruto’s administration to lower the cost of living, among
other issues.
Bishop Paul Korir of the ACK Kapsabet diocese, in a joint statement by various members of the clergy on Sunday said the government should be given at least one year to set plans to solve the problems facing Kenyans.
The leaders said this
at a prayer and thanksgiving ceremony at the agricultural exhibition grounds in
Kapsabet.
They committed to
praying for President Ruto and the entire Kenya Kwanza government in the fight
against banditry and cattle rustling.
“A testimony will be
given that banditry and cattle rustling menace was wiped out during the reign
of the fifth president of the Republic of Kenya,” Korir said.
At the same event, the
chairman of the Kalenjin Council of Elders (Myoot) Benjamin Kitur, urged Odinga
to give space to youthful leaders.
“Raila is my agemate,
I humbly request him to leave the younger generation to lead the country,”
Kitur said.
Kirur added that the
planned mass action organised by Odinga
is destabilising and should be shunned to allow the economic recovery of
this nation.
