Members of the clergy have called on Deputy President
Rigathi Gachagua to climb down and seek forgiveness from his boss, President
William Ruto.
A section of the clergy from Kisii, under the umbrella of
the Kisii County Clergy Forum, has asked the Deputy President to extend an
olive branch to President Ruto to calm the current heightened political
temperatures in the country.
Speaking in Kisii and Nairobi counties separately, the
clergy warned that the current impeachment circus will only polarize the
country and called for sobriety among leaders.
The sentiments come after 291 MPs signed the motion to
remove the DP from office.
"The Deputy President should remember that he is junior
to the President. He should seek out the President and have a discussion,” said
Peter Morwabe.
James Ondigo added, "When you started, we saw
you leading us in the right direction. Do not take the wrong path. We will not
be happy if you part ways; it will divide us."
The men of the cloth have also pleaded with the Deputy
President not to contemplate fighting the impeachment matter in the courts,
adding that it is likely to worsen the relationship between him and the
President.
"As much as we have differences, we still have a
country. There are interests we can set aside. Let us put Kenya first,” stated Bakari
Douglas.
Public hearings for Gachagua's removal have been scheduled
at Kisii Agricultural Training Centre for the residents of Kisii.
The Association of Pentecostal and Evangelical Clergy wants Gachagua
and his boss, to set aside their differences and seek the path of forgiveness.
Nyeri residents have also expressed their views on the
impeachment motion, with public participation hearings scheduled for Friday at
Nyeri Cultural Hall.
"We elected both of them. If one has to go, they should
both go,” said a Nyeri resident.
Meanwhile, a former National Intelligence Service officer in
Kirinyaga County has moved to the High Court in Kerugoya under a certificate of
urgency, filing a case against Gachagua over his remarks against NIS Director
Noordin Haji.
