CJ Koome Admits 224 new advocates
Two
hundred and twenty-four lawyers were on Tuesday admitted to the Roll of Advocates
at the Supreme Court.
Presiding
the ceremony, the Supreme Court President, Chief Justice Martha Koome said this
brings to 4,184 the number of advocates admitted to the Bar since she got into
office in May 2021.
CJ Koome
noted that a number of counties and sub-counties in historically marginalised
areas still do not have a significant presence of advocates and are in dire
need of legal services.
“We
still have many members of the vulnerable segment of our society including
children, persons living with disabilities, and victims of sexual and
gender-based violence who are often in dire need of legal services but do not
have access to the same,” Koome said.
She pointed
out a need for efficiency in the resolution of Kenya’s commercial disputes to boost
the country’s potential as a desired business destination.
“We
have rolled out a multi-door approach to dispute resolution including
Court-Annexed Mediations, Alternative Justice Systems, and Small Claims Courts,
which are opportunities that advocates should use to ensure efficient
resolution of disputes,” she said.
In
June, CJ Koome admitted 826 lawyers to the Bar, the highest number of recruits
in one sitting. In March, Koome admitted 466 lawyers to the Roll of
Advocates.
