Civil Servants will have to tighten their belts longer as the government has no intention of reviewing their salaries anytime soon despite the harsh economic times.

According to the Public Service Commission (PSC), the financial crisis facing the country has led to stagnated salaries.

This came as the commission identified economic challenges as one of the major causes of the rise in cases of mental health among government workers.

According to PSC Vice-Chairperson Mary Kimonye, review of salaries is subject to the revenue that the country collects.

She noted that due to the global financial crunch, Kenyans should brace for harsh times.

Kimonye was addressing the press at the sidelines of the sixth women in HR convention organized by the Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM).

She at the same time admitted that the number of women in the public service is lower (38 percent) compared to that of men (62 percent) and the government is addressing the case.

On mental health, she said that the government is working on early detection with mental champions appointed in every government department.

On her part, IHRM Executive Director Quresha Abddullahi noted that despite the high number of women as HR practitioners, the number of women in senior positions remain low.

She said the convention would take advantage of available policies to make workplaces better and bring more women into leadership roles.

IHRM vice-chair Beatrice Bii expressed commitment to promoting diversity and women's leadership within the HR profession.
