Annually on March 8th, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women.
A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from business conferences, networking events and government activities through to local women’s craft markets, theatrical performances, parades and more.
Citi Kenya celebrated this year’s International Women’s Day under the theme #EmbraceEquity on 11 March 2023 in a breakfast event attended by Citi staff and clients in Nairobi.
They were joined by a distinguished panel of industry leaders Catherine Muraga, – Managing Director, Microsoft Africa Development Center, Shehryar Bakht Ali, Country Manager Mastercard East Africa and Ory Okolloh, a renowned policy influencer & Partner at Verod-Kepple Africa Ventures (VKAV). The session was moderated by Yvonne Okwara, a leading journalist in Kenya.
In their diversity, the group had a vibrant discourse where they shared their valued opinions and experiences on the subject of Technology as an enabler that empowers women to sit at the table, take part in economic activities to improve their own social and economic standards as well as that of the society at large.
While delving into the subject, Catherine Muraga and Ory Okolloh addressed the theme ‘DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.’
The duo spoke passionately about how digital platforms have played a significant role in empowering women and promoting gender equality.
Digital platforms also provide access to resources and opportunities like training programs, networking events and mentorship programs that help advance one’s careers and skills enhancements.
They challenged fellow women in the audience to stand up and take up the opportunities that presented themselves and even turn what seems to be threats into great opportunities to thrive and excel in their spheres of exposure.
Shehryar Bakht Ali highlighted why allyship is crucial and that by working together; allies can amplify marginalized voices, break down barriers and learn about different experiences and perspectives.
Clara Masinde, a renowned wellness coach, took the stage on the second session of the morning conversation focusing on Nutritional Well-being, where personal wellness was highlighted as a huge direct contribution to personal daily productivity.
The event also marked the launch of Citi Kenya Women Hall of Fame which was awarded to Joyce-Ann Wainaina, former Citi East Africa CEO and Global Network Banking Head for Sub-Saharan Africa. She was recognized for her contribution to the Citi Women Network, lifting and inspiring female leaders to their full potential.
The 2023 theme for International Women’s Day aligns with Citi’s Mission and Value Proposition and the promotion of innovation through the inclusion of all.”
