Church service scuttled in Mwea after threat leaflets spark fears

Over 500 members of the Joy Holy Trinity Ministry in Gakungu village, Thiba Ward, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, were unable to attend their church service due to terrifying death threat leaflets warning their reverend.

The leaflets were distributed in Thiba and Ngurubani towns.

The faithful, led by John Muriithi, gathered near the church compound after the authors of the leaflets threatened to come armed.

"We are prepared to die alongside our reverend." "If they want his head, they can take mine as well," said congregant Grace Waikombe.

Ibrahim Macharia, a worshipper from Kiamanyeki village in Tebeere Ward, reported that a group of ten faithful have been providing 24-hour security at Reverend Bernard Njuguna's home in Karira village this week.

"We have been guarding the reverend's homestead every day," Macharia stated.

Reverend Njuguna reported the threats to the Mwea East DCI offices in Wanguru, but claims that no action was taken.

He denied the allegations against him, which included claims of sexual misconduct with congregants' spouses and financial impropriety involving a recently purchased property and a luxury vehicle worth Ksh 7 million.

Despite reporting the threats to authorities, Reverend Njuguna expressed frustration with the lack of response.

“After 21 days, they referred me to Kiamaciri police station. Why did they take my complaint in the first place if they were just going to pass me off?” he questioned.

Now, the reverend and his supporters intend to escalate the situation by raising their concerns with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki.

"We will travel to Nairobi because the threats against my family and me continue to escalate, and nothing has been done here in Kirinyaga County," Reverend Njuguna stated.
