Cheplaskei students trek 20km at night to protest school mismanagement

Uasin Gishu County Education Director John Thiringi addresses protesting students on Wednesday, January 29.

A wave of student unrest erupted in Uasin Gishu County on Tuesday night, when students from Cheplaskei Secondary School staged a dramatic 20-kilometer march to present their grievances to the County Commissioner.

According to Deputy County Commissioner Lilian Lagat, authorities were notified of the unusual protest around 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

"We received reports that students were marching toward the Uasin Gishu County Commissioner’s office. Our security teams were immediately deployed to ensure their safety," Lagat told the media.

Students cited inadequate teaching and poor school management as major concerns.

Despite the long journey, they were peaceful and caused no damage, according to Uasin Gishu County Education Director John Thiringi.

"We have already engaged with the students and assured them that their concerns will be addressed. They have since agreed to return to school," Thiringi stated, adding that further discussions with stakeholders are underway to resolve the issues.

He praised the security officers for their quick response and the students for maintaining order during the protest.

"We appreciate our security teams for protecting the students and commend the learners for expressing their grievances peacefully. They have our commitment that action will be taken," he assured.
