Chaos in Ruiru as Governor Wamatangi’s bursary event disrupted by youth demanding Ksh.1K handouts

Issuance of bursaries in Ruiru, Kiambu County turned chaotic on Tuesday after a group of rowdy youth were allegedly deployed to the scene to disrupt the exercise organized by Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

According to the governor’s communication team, the youth were allegedly ferried by a section of Members of County Assembly who are believed to be at loggerheads with the county boss.

Chaos erupted when Gatongora MCA John Njogu and his counterparts demanded that the governor should commence the event by first giving handouts of Ksh.1,000 or Ksh.2,000 to everyone who attended the event including the ferried youth.

The program was however briefly interrupted when the youth who allegedly appeared intoxicated together with some MCAs matched to the church ground where the event was happening to stop the issuance of cheques until the aforementioned amounts of handouts were given to everyone.

The governor was forced to move the people to a separate location within the church and regroup them according to their respective wards before handing the cheques to them.

Wamatangi pleaded with the youth to remain calm and cautioned them against being used by political players.

“Mimi nimekubali kufanya kazi na viongozi wenye wanataka kufanya kazi wote hata kama ni hawa MCAs wetu, yule mtu kweli roho yake iko na watu yake na anajua kwamba haja yake ni kusaidia wananachi,” Wamatangi said.

However, Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thangwa accused the governor of not taking people’s issues seriously further warning of difficult times if the county boss does not change his ways.

“If he doesn’t change it is not going to be easy because we started the meeting mediation dialogue with the MPs of Kiambu and the governor, and it did not work,” Karungo said.

“I asked the deputy president Rigathi Gachagua to invite us with the governor so that we can talk; when the governor comes to the meeting he is discussing some irrelevant issues of how he was removed from a WhatsApp group…not issues that are affecting the people of Kiambu,” he added.

The event was organized to issue bursaries to 3,200 students belonging to eight wards; Gitothua, Mwiki, Kahawa Sukari, Kahawa Wendani, Biashara, Mwihoko, Gatongora and Kiuu.
