Chaos in Nandi as police unleash teargas during MP Salasya’s rally

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya’s meeting in Mosoriot, Nandi County, came to an abrupt halt after police disrupted it, saying there was no permit to hold a public gathering.

Salasya was addressing the public along the road in a convoy of vehicles before police officers disrupted the rally.

The ensuing chaos resulted in the police lobbing teargas canisters to disperse the crowd.

“Si nyinyi wananchi wote mnaona, Salasya hajatusi mtu yeyote lakini wanapiga marisasi,” he said amidst cheers from the congregation demanding that he address them.

Taking to social media, the lawmaker condemned the state for what he termed as intimidation, noting that every Kenyan has the freedom to speak and hold rallies everywhere in the country.

“Threats and intimidation are cowardice. Why teargas the peaceful people of Mosoriot when they want to listen to me? It is unacceptable! Rift Valley pia ni Kenya,” he stated.

The outspoken MP, who has recently been on a charm offensive across the country pursuing his presidential bid, had to proceed towards the West Indies area as police pursued him.

The police directed him to seek a permit before addressing the public.

The development comes barely a week after the MP faced a similar attack in Isiolo, which resulted in his arrest and detention.

MP Salasya was later arraigned at the Milimani Law Court on Monday last week and freed on a cash bail of Ksh.200,000 in a hate speech case.
