Chaos erupts at Kirinyaga funeral after Mathira MP Wamumbi fires shots at Gachagua
Chaos on Wednesday broke out at Muragara Primary School grounds
in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, when supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi
Gachagua and those of Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi clashed at
funeral service.
The supporters were attending the funeral service of the late
Anne Wanjiru Mumbuchi when clashes over political differences broke out.
Drama started when MP Wamumbi spoke against Gachagua when he
addressed the mourners, claiming that the former DP did not support late Wanjiru
despite her being his political supporter.
The Mathira legislator accused Gachagua of merely using Wanjiru politically and then dumping her afterwards.
“Ukweli ni kwamba Rigathi Gachagua hajasaidia huyu mama, na kama
amesaidia akuje aseme hapa amemasaidia na nini. Rigathi Gachagua ametumia huyu
mama na hajamsaidia na kitu,” said Wamumbi.
“Na sisi kama watu wa Mathira hatuungi Rigathi Gachagua mkono
sababu aliachilia huyu mama…alimtumia akamwachilia. Sisi kama watu wa Mathira
hatuungi msimamo wa Rigathi Gachagua.”
It was then that Gachagua's supporters confronted Wamumbi and
urged him to leave the funeral, but the MP and his supporters maintained their
ground.
Kirinyaga leaders among them Senator Kamau Murango, Woman
Representative Njeri Maina and Baragwi MCA David Mathenge condemned Wamumbi over
what they termed as his arrogance, saying they had agreed to keep off politics
at the funeral.
“We did not speak politics as we agreed but it is him who has
caused all this chaos for accusing the former DP who was not here,” said Murango.
The chaos almost disrupted the funeral but calm returned after
about 30 minutes of back and forth.
