Chaos erupt after man shot dead by police in Kiamaiko

Scenes from the chaos that erupted in Kiamaiko, Nairobi on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

Enraged residents of Kiamaiko area in Nairobi took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the alleged killing of a man by police.

As a result, pockets of Outering Road were virtually impassable for most parts of the day.

The incident is reported to have happened after an attempt by police to recover a stolen motorbike went terribly wrong.

The protestors engaged police along the busy Outering Road after a man was allegedly shot and killed in Kiamaiko area.

The day-long clash saw angry youth light bonfires on the roads blocking motorists and other users for hours, prompting police to redirect traffic to alternative routes.

According to police, a contingent of officers attempted to recover a stolen motorcycle they had been tracking in the area.

The suspect believed to have stolen the motorbike was fatally shot in the process, provoking residents to take to the streets.

“The man who was killed is my neighbour and a very calm guy. His name is Galano. He is the chairman of this carwash. When the cops came he was trying to calm the youth when tensions rose and then the cop shot,” explained Halima Wario, a resident.

Adan added: “Here are the bullet casings. They shot him in the head and chest. There is no difference between police and thieves in this place. They all steal from us.”

Traders whose business premises had been damaged by protestors engaged the youth further adding to the daylong clashes in the area.

Residents are calling for swift investigations into the matter to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
