Celebrated scholar and historian Sheikh Abdillahi Nassir dies in Mombasa

Celebrated scholar, historian and cleric Sheikh Abdillahi Nassir has died in Mombasa.

Leaders from Mombasa led by Governor Hassan Joho have sent their condolences mourning his death.

Governor Joho acknowledged the late Nassir as a forefront leader in fighting for Kenya's freedom even before Kenya gained its independence.

"It is with profound sadness that I receive the news of the passing on of Sheikh Abdullahi Nassir," wrote the Mombasa county boss on Twitter.

"He was a highly revered scholar, a literary genius and  a man of impeccable character."

Joho added that Nassir will be remembered for his contribution in fighting for the rights of Kenyans and for pursuing education to significant levels.

The scholar has written and assisted in writing several books and booklets on the Swahili language, (seven in all), and on Islam (20), some of which have been translated into English and Rwandese.

He is also the father to historian and teacher Stanmbuli Abdillah Nassir.
