CA Chair Kembi Gitura resigns to vie for Murang’a Senatorial seat
Communication
Authority of Kenya (CA) Chairperson Kembi Gitura has tendered his
resignation to venture into politics ahead of the August polls.
Gitura,
who was the first Murang’a Senator after the 2010 Constitution, expressed his
interest in taking back the legislative seat saying he was best qualified.
“I
tendered my resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta for the appointment on 8th February
with a view and intention of running for the Senate seat of Murang’a County. I
want to make it clear that I am in the race,” Gitura said in an interview with
local TV station.
The
former deputy speaker of the Senate urged his constituents to consider his
candidature saying he had set a track record in his first tenure.
He
underscored the role of devolution in the country and his commitment to
ensuring the county’s resources were put to good use.
“I
think there was unfinished business. I have been there in the past and the people
have tested and that is why I am asking the people of Murang’a to vote for me
because they know me,” he said.
“I
am a very strong defender of devolution; the importance of devolution cannot be
gain-said.”
Consequently,
the ex-KEMSA Chair implored his electorates not to be wooed by incapable
leaders due to their parties.
“People
cannot afford to elect anyone emotionally because of the party, we must elect
people who will deliver the mandate given to them,” Gitura added.
Prior
to his appointment as CA chair, Gitura was Kenya Medical Supplies Authority
(KEMSA) board Chairperson before the 2020 scandal that saw him exit.
In
2017, he was trounced by the incumbent Senator Irungu Kang’ata who was running
on a Jubilee ticket in both the party primaries and elections.
Gitura
now adds his name to a list of contestants such as political analyst Peter
Kagwanja, Educationist Joe Nyutu, veteran journalist Stanley Karuri, Hellen
Mwangi and Pius Kinuthia.
