Kenya's security department has been allocated
Ksh.377.5 billion for the fiscal year 2024/25.
Speaking at Parliament Grounds on Thursday when he
read budget estimates for the next financial year, Treasury Cabinet Secretary
(CS) Prof. Njuguna Ndung'u earmarked
the sum to support operations at the National Police Service (NPS), Defence,
the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and Prison Services.
"Mr. Speaker, enhanced national security
creates an enabling environment for business to thrive while aiding faster
economic recovery. In this regard, I have proposed an allocation of Ksh 377.5
billion to support operations of the National Police Service, Defence, the
National Intelligence Service and Prison Services," said Njuguna.
From the Ksh.377.5
billion, Ksh.173.1 billion will go to Defence while Ksh.110.6 billion has been
allocated to the NPS.
" Mr. Speaker, the
proposed allocations include Ksh 46.3 billion for the National Intelligence
Service; and Ksh 32.7 billion for Prisons Services," the Treasury CS said.
"I have proposed
an allocation of Ksh 13.9 billion to cater for leasing of police motor vehicles
and the Modernization Programme."
The Treasury CS
likewise allocated over Ksh.900 million to equip the National Forensic
Laboratory, with the kitty set aside to enhance forensic capabilities, such as
DNA analysis, ballistics testing, and other scientific methods used in criminal
investigations, with the aim of improving the NPS' ability to solve
crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
"Mr. Speaker, to step up war
on crime and enhance support to 82 administration of justice, I have proposed
Ksh 918.4 million to equip the National Forensic Laboratory," Njuguna
said.
