The British High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan, on Monday defended the agreement between Britain and Kenya on the export of nurses saying that Kenya stood a good chance to gain a long-term deal from the partnership.

In an interview with Citizen Digital, Wigan admitted that the UK was facing a shortage in the health sector particularly the nurses, hence the programme was good and a win for the country since most nurses are educated to the best standards, but lacked jobs.

“It is good for them because we are offering this to people who recently qualified but don’t have jobs. We are not taking people away from Kenyan hospitals but we endeavor to give them opportunity in line with their career.

“We also aim to have them get skills from UK that are essential in the career here in Kenya. They will also be able to remit back, which will be vital the country’s growth,” he explained.

Pertaining to the climate change sustainability, the High Commissioner commended on the African-Climate Summit held in Nairobi last year September, saying that it depicted continent’s concessional effort and stand to mitigating the climate change menace.

“The Nairobi Declaration brought a huge success. People still talk about it. We have also seen a lot of world-class solutions and innovations. Some Kenyan companies produce the best technology in the world that is not only practical in Kenya but the whole world.”

Wigan also highlighted Britain's plan of promoting the education sector and harnessing the sports talent development among the youth. According to him, Kenyan youth have a great potential and the deep collaboration between the two countries aimed at building education links that includes offering scholarships for them to study in the UK and acquire skills that can sustain them in the country.
