British Gov't dismisses claims of fresh Mau Mau compensation payouts
The British High Commission has issued a statement refuting
widespread allegations regarding compensation funds for descendants of the Mau
Mau movement in Kenya.
British High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan, in a letter to Nyeri’s
Chinga Ward MCA Kiruga Thuku on Thursday, clarified that no payments have been
made to the Kenyan Government, individuals, or groups since the final
settlement in 2013.
Wigan stated that the British Govern ment resolved all claims
relating to the Emergency Period in a 2013 agreement, marking the end of
compensation payouts.
He firmly stated that any allegations accusing President William
Ruto or his administration of withholding such funds are baseless.
"We wish to clarify that the British Government has not
disbursed any compensation to the Government of Kenya or to any individuals or
groups associated with Mau Mau descendants since the 2013 final settlement of
claims," read the letter.
“Allegations that the President of the Republic of Kenya or
the Government of Kenya is withholding compensation funds are therefore
unfounded.”
The High Commissioner also urged the public to exercise
caution against unauthorized individuals or groups claiming to facilitate
compensation.
Members of the public were advised to avoid paying for
registration or services related to these alleged funds and to report
suspicious activities to local authorities.
The clarification comes amidst a surge in misinformation
circulating online, leading to confusion among many Kenyans.
The High Commission emphasized its commitment to transparency
and ensuring the public remains well-informed about matters of mutual interest.
