Breakthrough in South Sudan peace Initiative as stakeholders commit to mediation

Stakeholders from various sectors have agreed to participate in open mediation aimed at finding long-term solutions to the ongoing conflicts in South Sudan.

The initiative, led by retired General Lazarus Sumbeiywo, has received support from opposition groups, the transitional government, women's organisations, and youth leaders.

General Sumbeiywo spoke to the media at a Nairobi hotel after all stakeholders signed an agreement to participate in the mediation process. He emphasised the importance of embracing a spirit of compromise.

He urged all parties involved to take a give-and-take approach, emphasising the importance of resolving the long-standing issues that have plagued South Sudan since its independence in 2011.

"I am pleased that all opposition groups have agreed to engage with the government of South Sudan to address the issues that have led to internal conflicts since 2013," stated General Sumbeiywo.

"It is time to put an end to the violence that has ripped communities apart and caused tremendous suffering."

During the signing ceremony, representatives from opposition groups, youth organisations, women's associations, and civil societies pledged their support for the mediation process.

Under General Sumbeiywo's supervision, each party involved in the "Tumaini Peace Initiative" will designate two representatives to participate in the mediations.

The stakeholders' declaration represents a significant step forward in South Sudan's peace process.

The initiative comes at a critical time for South Sudan, which has experienced years of conflict, resulting in humanitarian crises and widespread displacement.

The international community has praised General Sumbeiywo's efforts and the determination of South Sudanese stakeholders to find a peaceful solution to the country's internal conflict.
