Boda boda operator arrested as police recover firearm stolen from drunk DCI officer
Police in Kayole, Nairobi County have arrested a boda boda operator for allegedly being in possession of a firearm that was reportedly stolen from a DCI officer attached to the Anti-Terror
Police Unit (ATPU) in August.
Moses Makau Ndunda, a boda boda operator working around Saika stage, was
apprehended by authorities following a tip-off from members of the public.
He subsequently led police to his residence in Dandora where the stolen ceska
handgun was recovered.
"Upon interrogation he led police officers to
his residence within Dandora Phase II where he resides with his wife and two
children. Upon conducting a search, a Ceska pistol S/NO.KE KP A048878 loaded
with 14 rounds of 9mm recovered there in," a police report documenting the
incident reads in part.
"The same is said to have been robbed off from no.120531 PC Peter
Mburu Irungu attached to ATPU Nairobi detachment. Also
detained was a motorcycle Reg. No. KMGC 305P, make Lefan, red in colour."
Irungu reported the gun as having
been stolen on August 17, 2024, following a night of merry-making in Mihang'o
area along the Eastern Bypass with two of his friends, Charles Njunge and
another individual only identified as Alvin.
According to a
police report of the incident, the trio were drinking at a joint located in the
Eagle Business Centre around 9:30 PM before moving to another place called
Click.
"After drinking, the officer alleges that they moved to a nearby
joint named "Click," located at Astrol Petrol Station about 600
meters from Eagle Centre. They indulged until about 0200 hrs when they parted
ways," the police report reads.
"He reported that he thereafter proceeded to the residence of his
parents located at Green Court Mihang'o."
Irung'u claimed to have been
accosted by two persons on a boda boda before he arrived at his mother's
residence.
They reportedly made away with the Ceska
pistol S/N A048878 loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a wallet
containing the officer's certificate of
appointment and bank cards and a Nokia C32mobile phone.
"Immediately, the scene was
visited by Stapol Mihango and DCI Kayole team. The team proceeded to the Eagle
Business Centre and Click Wine and Spirit joint where the officer was drinking.
It was noted that there are CCTV cameras. The team also visited the residence
of the officer's parents at Green Court Mihango," reads the police report.
"It was confirmed by the
officer's wife, Elizabeth Nyawira, that he left the house armed in the morning
of 17/08/2024. Though the officer indicated that he was robbed along Gesora
Road, he could not exactly pinpoint the location of the alleged incident."
Irungu was subsequently placed under
arrest to assist with investigations.
"The officer was placed in
custody, appearing drunk with bruises on his mouth, elbows, and right knee,
with torn trousers and a T-shirt to assist in investigations..."
