Black Quarter disease kills 27 cows in Migori
Residents of Winjo
area in Muhuru ward of Nyatike, Migori County, are counting losses following after
the Black Quarter disease reportedly claimed 27 cows.
Winjo sub-location
Assistant Chief Benard Nyitambe said the deaths were recorded from Friday last
week till Wednesday this week.
Mr. Nyitambe said
there are many other cows which are also in very critical condition following
the outbreak of the Black Quarter disease in the sub-location and its
neighbouring areas.
The administrator said
they have made a communication to the relevant department but are yet to get
help from the veterinary officers.
Mr. Nyitambe stated there is an urgent need by the government to help the helpless farmers so that
they don’t continue losing their animals.
He noted the people
of the area depend entirely on livestock keeping and therefore such a disease
outbreak is a threat to their livelihood, hence there is urgent need to save
them before it gets worse.
A similar outbreak
of Black Quarter disease was experienced in the same region in January 2024
where many farmers lost their cattle to the disease.
