Bipartisan talks in limbo as Azimio demands removal of MP Keynan from Kenya Kwanza team

Members of the parliamentary bipartisan committee from Azimio la Umoja and Kenya Kwanza Coalitions after a meeting on April 20, 2023.

The Azimio la Umoja coalition has declined an invitation to a meeting to iron out the matters of contention between the government and the opposition.

Tharaka MP George Murugara, who is Kenya Kwanza's team lead in the bipartisan committee penned a letter dated April 28 to Azimio's Otiende Omollo, inviting him to a co-chairpersons and House leadership meeting.

The meeting agenda, Murugara stated, was to "discuss the modalities of recommencing the bipartisan talks which had been adjourned."

In a rebuttal, Omollo maintained that the Azimio team shall not avail themselves in the aforesaid meeting until Eldas MP Adan Keynan (of Jubilee) is withdrawn from the team representing Kenya Kwanza in the talks.

"I advise that I shall not be available for the proposed meeting," he said in the letter.

"Our team is not available for any discussions until and unless there is communication of withdrawal and/or replacement of Hon. Adan Keynan as a member of the Kenya Kwanza team."

Azimio has been contesting MP Keynan's appointment to Kenya Kwanza's 7-member delegation, claiming that he belongs to their camp since he is a Jubilee party member.

Kenya Kwanza has however maintained that they are willing to hold the talks, urging Azimio to reconsider their position and allow room for peaceful agreements.
