Faki who said he would be vacating office on the 15th of March stated that his throat was “choked with emotion,” but despite this, “I will have ended my term and I will not stay one day more.”
Faki who is expected to present a report to the 38th Ordinary Assembly of Heads of State and Government on Saturday, wished the incoming leadership the best.
Among those present for Faki’s address was Djibouti Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssouf who is a member of the Executive Council by virtue of his portfolio and who is running against Kenya’s Raila Odinga in the race to succeed Faki.
Also present was Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
In his opening statement, the Chair of the Executive Council, Mohamed Salem, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauritania, called for the elections to be carried out in the African fashion of “brotherhood” and mutual cooperation.
The Council which is holding its 46th Ordinary Session on Wednesday and Thursday will also be electing six commissioners to the African Union Commission for Agriculture, Economic Development, Education, Infrastructure and Energy, Political Affairs, Peace and Security and Health.
