The Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) has officially received a license from the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) to operate the Northern Collector Bulk Water Supply System, marking a significant milestone in Kenya's efforts to improve access to clean, reliable, and safe water.

The Northern Collector Tunnel (NCT) project is poised to transform water service provision for millions of residents in Nairobi and its surrounding counties.

This flagship initiative includes the construction of a 12-kilometre Northern Water Collector Tunnel, the Kigoro Water Treatment Plant, and a 55-kilometre pipeline from the Thika (Ndakaini) Dam to Gigiri, which will deliver an additional 140 million litres of water per day to serve Nairobi and its neighbouring counties.

Areas such as Gatanga in Murang’a County, Gatundu, Githunguri, Ruiru, and Kiambu Urban in Kiambu County, along with Ongata Rongai, Kitengela in Kajiado County, and Mavoko and the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Machakos County, are expected to see a significant improvement in water services.

Recognizing the national importance of this project, WASREB has granted AWWDA the official license to operate the Northern Collector Bulk Water Supply System, effective September 30, 2024.

Addressing Critical Water Needs

Mr. Charles Karondo, Chairman of the AWWDA Board of Directors, emphasized the critical role this development plays in addressing long-standing water shortages in the city and its surroundings.

"This is not just a technical achievement; it is a game-changer for millions of people who have faced challenges accessing clean and safe water. With the operationalization of the NCT Bulk Water Supply System, we are not only enhancing water availability but also ensuring a sustainable future for water management."

The benefits of the project extend beyond infrastructure; it aims to improve public health, promote economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for families and businesses alike.

Communities that previously lacked reliable access to clean water will experience reduced rationing, improved hygiene, and overall well-being. The NCT project's strategic impact aligns with the Government’s goal of achieving universal access to safe water by 2030.

With this new mandate, AWWDA reaffirms its commitment to delivering improved water services. The organization will continue to collaborate closely with national and county governments, as well as local communities, to ensure that the benefits of the NCT Bulk Water Supply System are felt by all.
