AstraZeneca donates Ksh.8M Cancer biopsy machine to Kakamega General Hospital

AstraZeneca, through its Cancer Care Africa (CCA) initiative, has donated a state-of-the-art prostate cancer ultrasound biopsy machine worth Ksh.8 million to Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Bernard Oduor, the Associate Director of Government Affairs for Sub-Saharan Africa at AstraZeneca, says the donation aims to address the current scenario where a staggering 80% of prostate cancer patients in Kenya are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease with aggressive tumours.

The equipment is also meant to boost equitable access to state-of-the-art technology to help with early and accurate detection.

He also added that in the pharmaceutical company’s ongoing efforts to equip Kenyan hospitals with prostate cancer diagnostic machines, Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital becomes the seventh hospital to receive the ultrasound biopsy machine with 6 counties having received the machine.
