In her opening remarks, Ambassador Guo welcomed the attendees, including Honorable Ummi Bashir, Principal Secretary for Culture, the Arts and Heritage, along with leaders of the Chinese community in Kenya. “The Spring Festival is not just a celebration of the Chinese New Year; it’s a cultural bridge that unites people across borders,” she said.
The ambassador highlighted the festival’s recent recognition as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, underscoring its role in fostering global cultural integration. “This celebration embodies shared human values—harmony, happiness, and a better future—which resonate with people from all cultures,” she noted.
A Celebration of Traditions
Guests at the gala were treated to a colorful array of activities, including the writing of Spring Festival couplets, dragon and lion dances, and demonstrations of traditional crafts like paper cutting and knot weaving. Culinary delights such as dumplings added to the festive atmosphere, offering attendees a taste of China’s rich heritage.
The event also featured performances from the "Henan Spring Festival Overseas Gala: Africa Tour," whose captivating displays of Shaolin Kung Fu, acrobatics, and Henan opera drew enthusiastic applause. Kenyan students from local Confucius Institutes joined the performances, symbolizing the growing cultural ties between the two nations.
Strengthening Sino-Kenyan Bonds
Ambassador Guo praised the Chinese community in Kenya for their dedication to promoting cultural exchange and fostering understanding between China and Kenya. “Your efforts lay a solid foundation for deeper people-to-people connections and mutual respect between our countries,” she said.
She also reiterated China’s commitment to the Global Civilization Initiative, a framework for promoting mutual learning and inclusivity among diverse cultures. “The Spring Festival serves as a vivid example of how different civilizations can learn from and complement each other,” she added.
