Alarm over sale of un-inspected meat in Embu butcheries
Embu County Public Health officials have raised concern
over rampant sale of un-inspected meat that has hit various towns within the
county.
The officials on Monday expressed concern after over 300 kg of un-inspected meat that was nabbed on transit within Runyenjes town in Embu East.
Chief Public Health Officer Daniel Mbogo cautioned
butchery owners against selling un-inspected meat.
He said they nabbed over 250 heads of goats and sheep last
week, which were not inspected and destined for sale in local butcheries
Mbogo said public health officers acting on a tip-off
from members of the public pounced on some people ferrying head goats and sheep
carcasses of four goats, already some meat had been distributed to the public.
Mbogo also queried the source of meats on display on
various butcheries across Embu town when slaughterhouses have been registering
an average of five to six cows being slaughtered.
He said investigations have been launched and called upon all public officers to ensure that all that meats being sold to the public was inspected and stamped and report any malpractices that may be detected to enable quick action.
