Agriculture CS Linturi leads planting of 10,000 trees in Samburu
The event, part of the national tree-growing day, saw the collective efforts of government officials and enthusiastic residents resulting in the planting of an impressive 10,000 trees in the county.
The planting event marked a crucial step towards fulfilling President William Ruto's ambitious target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032.
The exercise is aimed at elevating Kenya's forest cover from the current 12% to an impressive 30%, serving as a bulwark against the adverse impacts of climate change.
Addressing the pressing need to fortify Samburu County against the perils of climate change, CS Linturi emphasized the alliance between the Ministry of Agriculture and the County Government of Samburu.
The collaboration has already seen the implementation of a series of agricultural productivity projects and programs valued at over Ksh 1.9 Billion, aimed at enhancing resilience and sustainability in the face of environmental challenges.
Linturi echoed President Ruto's call for a unified front comprising the national and county governments, private sector, NGOs, educational institutions, religious groups, and the public at large.
"I appreciate all those who have joined us here today for this exercise and especially all partners for their support and urge them to walk with us by providing technical and financial resources for this noble initiative.
"Let us all strive to ensure a 100 percent survival rate of the trees we will plant here today and many more afterwards so that we reap the benefits that come with well-conserved environments," said the CS.
The event in Tamiyoi was graced by Samburu Governor Jonathan Lati Leleliit, County Commissioner Henry Wafula, and a cohort of government officials.
