Aga Khan Hospital performs first penile implant surgery in the region
The surgery, a first of its kind in East and Central Africa, was performed on the patient after alternative treatments failed to alleviate his condition.
The procedure, which takes approximately an hour to perform, involves implanting a prosthetic device in the penis to allow men with ED to get an erection. Multiple tests conducted on the patient revealed that his condition was a result of severe venous leakage in his manhood.
When a man is aroused, the veins in his manhood enlarge to facilitate blood flow into the penis’ shaft. The erection remains firm owing to the fact that veins shrink to hold back blood in the shaft until ejaculation. In the instance of the said patient, his veins would not contract normally meaning that his erections did not remain as firm.
“The advantage of this surgery is that the man can have intercourse anytime they like without using medication,” explains Dr Ahmed Yousef, a Consultant Urologist and the lead surgeon for the procedure.
“Through this procedure his erectile dysfunction condition has been treated. If he had an issue with premature ejaculation, it will also be treated by this procedure.”
According to the Hospital, approximately 15-20 per cent of men in the country suffer silently from ED and premature ejaculation.
“These patients can access specialized care from urologists at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi,” the Hospital said in a statement.
