African Heads of State arrive in Kenya for high-level AU meeting
The leaders were received at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by Cabinet Secretaries.
Zachariah Njeru, the Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development was at the JKIA to receive and welcome the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Mohamed al-Menfi.
The other Heads of State and Governments who are attending the meeting include the Presidents of Gabon, Egypt, Comoros, Botswana, Senegal, Chad, Burundi (also the Chairperson of the East African Community), Algeria, DRC and Djibouti.
Presidents who have so far arrived in Kenya include, Azali Assoumani (Comoros) who was received by Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, Abdel Fatah El-Sisi (Egypt) who was welcomed by Defence CS Aden Duale, Ali Bongo Ondiba (Gabon) who was received by Health CS Susan Nakhumicha and Macky Sall (Senegal) who was received by Energy CS Davis Chirchir.
15 Heads of State are expected to grace the high-level meeting, which will be held in Nairobi on Sunday, July 16.
In a communique this week, Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua noted that the theme for this year’s conference is “Acceleration of AfCFTA Implementation’, which he added is aimed at fast-tracking the achievement of one of the flagship projects of Agenda 2063; ‘The Africa We Want.”
The meeting seeks to consider and approve the AU financial budget for 2024, assess the implementation of AU decisions and also adopt new decisions on substantive issues of continental interest.
