Abdulswamad Nassir declared Mombasa Governor-elect
Incumbent Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has
been declared Mombasa Governor-elect.
In the mini-elections conducted on August 29, Abdulswamad who contested on an ODM ticket emerged winner after garnering 119,083 votes.
He trounced UDA Party’s Hassan Omar Sarai, who emerged second with 98,105 votes.
Other contestants were Awiti Bolo of VDP party, William Kingi (PAA), Daniel Munga Kitsao (Independent), Shafi Makazi Mwaganda (Independent) and Said Omar Abdalla.
Abdulswamad, who served as Mvita MP in the 12th
parliament will be Mombasa’s second Governor, succeeding Ali Hassan Joho.
On Tuesday morning, ex-Nairobi Governor Mike
Sonko – who was supporting UDA’s Omar sent a congratulatory message to Abdulswamad.
“Congratulations
Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir for your win as the second Governor of Mombasa we
live to fight another day. I would also like to thank all our supporters for
believing in us and voted for our candidate Hassan Omar Sarai, despite the loss
let's remain strong and even more united as we shall always be there for
everyone of you even those who never voted for us,” he wrote in a tweet.
He
further promised to support him through the Sonko Rescue team.
