Abductions: Opposition calls for resignation, arrest of President Ruto

Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka (centre) addresses the press at the SKM Command Centre on January 15, 2025.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for President William Ruto to resign over the recent wave of abductions that has also affected key political figures such as Public Service CS Justin Muturi whose son was abducted and later released.

Muturi released a statement on Tuesday detailing the events of how his son was abducted by National Intelligence Service (NIS) operatives and later released after he pleaded with President Ruto to intervene.

According to Kalonzo, such actions by the Ruto regime ought to be investigated by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

"The only solution is for President William Ruto to resign. The world has changed, and people must be held accountable, which is what Gen Z advocates for," he said.

Kalonzo wondered if Muturi, who sits at the National Security Council, would go through all the trouble in finding his son, then how would a common mwananchi with no connections to the political elite receive assistance?

"Muturi said he has been waiting for answers for six months on what happened to his son. What should be worrying to Kenyans is that he sits on the National Security Council, and this should be a matter of great concern to all of us. If the idea of telling Muturi to write a report at the DCI is to silence him, they picked the wrong man," Kalonzo said.

"We have since established that the head of this abduction squad is located in Ruaraka. President Ruto and his allies' dictatorship must be considered an ICC statute case. The blame doesn’t fall on the DCI boss but on President Ruto’s chest-thumping."

His remarks were echoed by Jubilee party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni who insinuated that it's high time for Kenyans to arrest the president due to the widespread disaffection towards his administration.

"It's time we go and arrest President William Ruto because Kenyans have been left alone. Any person within the KK administration who chooses to remain until the end doesn’t be used. Come and join us to help remove President Ruto. Kenyans have resolved that his government is not going to intimidate us, and the time to act is now," he pointed out.

The Kenya Kwanza administration has been on the receiving end of constant criticism over the recent abductions; with critics claiming that Nairobi has become the abduction capital of the world.

According to the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHRC), 85 abductions have been recorded since June last year. Out of this, 25 Kenyans are still missing.
