A day with destiny: Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza to know her fate on Friday
Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza will know her fate on Friday,
December 30 as the Senate holds a special sitting to consider the report of the
11-member committee formed to probe the allegations levelled against her by the
county assembly.
The committee which concluded its sittings at 2 am Wednesday
night has since retreated to draft its report which will be tabled on the floor
of the House as the 10-day window to determine Kawira’s fate lapses.
Governor Mwangaza who had initially declined to face the
committee took to the witness box and denied the 62 allegations leveled
against her including nepotism and irregular appointments, abuse of office, and
gross violation of the constitution and other county laws.
“I have never made an appointment on behalf of the county
government of MERU the exercise of employing staff is under the county public
service board...,” she submitted
Kawira was faced with the difficult task of clearing the air
on her spouse's appointment as Meru youth service patron and hustlers
ambassador after she stated that his appointment was under her charitable
program called Okolea.
The committee members expressed concern over the sour
relationship between the governor and the elected members in the county calling
for a truce.
“We have seen clips of a governor who is outrageously
aggressive on other leaders, the bible says pride comes before a fall, i hope
this victory is not your downfall,” Nominated Senator Peris Tobiko stated.
In response, the governor submitted: “I am able to bring all
the leaders together but you have seen MCAs saying kaende kaende, there is no
way I could convince them to sit down until they brought their governor to the
Senate… Maybe because they have fulfilled their plan maybe they will talk...”
The Special Commitee has the option of upholding the
impeachment which will mean the report will be debated in the House for members
to vote and determine her fate, if they overturn the impeachment, Mwangaza
resumes her duties as the third governor of Meru County
“For anyone who feel offended by my leadership, I have
apologised last one month I apologized 70 times, and even now I apologise,” the
Governor told the committee.
