95-year-old groom weds 90-year-old bride in Mukurweini

Newlyweds Ibrahim Mbogo, 95, and his lover, Tabitha Wangui Mbogo, 90 after their white wedding on Sunday, August 18.

There was joy at the Tambaya PCEA Church in Mukurweini on Sunday when Ibrahim Mbogo, 95, walked down the aisle with his lover, Tabitha Wangui Mbogo, 90, 64 years after they met and fell in love.

The couple told the media that they chose a white wedding to symbolise their unwavering love and commitment to one another.

They married under Kikuyu customary law, according to Mr. Mbogo, who revealed that he met his wife Wangui in the 1960s.

He stated that, while they were married under traditional law, they felt it was appropriate to have a white wedding because they are both Christians.

"We met and fell in love in 1960, do you hear?"  Mbogo posed in an interview outside the church.

"We deliberated together and decided it would be  great if we did a white wedding, we know in our Gikuyu custom that we are legally married, but since we are also Christians, we decided to do a church wedding."

According to Wangui, the secret spice for a long and healthy marital union lies in respect and apologising for mistakes.

"Women, you must respect your husbands, If you do that, then you will live as we have," Wangui told Citizen.Digital.

"Don't do any wrong, and  when you do, just apologise and seek forgiveness."

Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia, who was among the guests at the wedding, urged residents to emulate the couple, stating that a strong family unit is the most important building block of a healthy nation.

"There is no greater gift than the gift of family," the MP said.  "This family unit is what makes a nation thrive."
I wish we can all emulate what this couple has shown us today, that it is beautiful to grow old together. "
