9 police officers injured in clash with Maasai herders on Narok-Kisii highway discharged from hospital

The nine police officers who were injured during the clash between authorities and residents in Duka Moja, along the Narok–Kisii highway on Friday, have been treated and discharged from various hospitals.

Survivors of the deadly Narok road riots narrated to Citizen TV the ordeal that turned deadly.

One of them, Florence Kemunto, counts herself lucky to be alive. She sustained gunshot injuries during Friday’s clash between anti-riot police and irate herders at Duka Moja and is recuperating at the Narok Referral Hospital.

The herders had blocked the Narok-Kisii Highway to protest the killing of their livestock, which were run over by a bus on Thursday night.

"I was coming from the farm when I heard people talking about a protest. The police started running, and as I was running towards my place, I got shot while taking cover in a hotel," Kemunto said.

She added that she was not part of the protests but was hit by a stray bullet in the thigh. Two bullets are still lodged in her body.

"The doctors have told me that there are two bullets inside me. I don’t know how it all happened since I was far from the scene. The doctors want me to be monitored for a few more days," she said.

Narok County police commander Riko Ngare says that nine officers who were injured during the demonstrations were treated and discharged last evening.

The residents are said to have returned the firearm that was snatched from one of the police officers during the mayhem.

Three people were killed and one police officer was badly wounded following the violent clashes.
