80-year-old woman allegedly burnt to death by grandson over Inua Jamii cash in Kakamega

Police in Khwisero, Kakamega have launched investigations into a case where an 80-year-old woman was burnt to death at her house in Shetimba village Wednesday night.

According to reports, the police suspect the deceased's grandson 40-year-old Silas Lisero to be responsible for the fire after he allegedly engaged in an altercation with the elderly woman while asking her for money.

It is believed that Lisero then set ablaze the house out of rage while the elderly woman, Philois Lisero, was inside the house.

According to the family, Philoris was expected to receive Ksh.8,000 from the government's Inua Jamii cash transfer programme when the suspect started demanding for it before the deceased even it. 

Area OCPD Kipyego Kogo has confirmed the incident saying that the suspect, who is said to be mentally ill, was attacked by area locals before being rescued by police officers.

Kogo has said that Silas is receiving treatment at Sonak Khwisero Hospital is expected to undergo a mental examination before being arraigned in court.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to the Yala hospital morgue.
