5-year-old girl drowns in pit left open by road contractors in Migori
The minor drowned in a large pit that was left open by the road contractors after harvesting murram in Suna East, Migori County last week.
Suna-Sagegi location Chief Sila Ogutu said the minor who was in company of four other children was swimming in the pit when she drowned.
Ogutu said the other four children who survived were rescued by the locals who heard them screaming.
The body of the girl was retrieved and moved to the mortuary for preservation pending investigations.
Ogutu called for investigations on the contractor that left the pit open after harvesting murram that was used for road construction.
He warned that the open pits left by a contractor in the region and other parts of Migori County have become a death trap hence the contractors should be compelled to refill them as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, he appealed to the parents to ensure they take good care of their children during this rainy season.
