30M users, 22,515 services: President Ruto hails E-Citizen as a game-changer in governance
The President spoke on Thursday at the First Anniversary of the E-Citizen Directorate at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, reflecting on the platform's achievements and outlining plans for the future of digital public services in Kenya.
“A year and a half ago, we stood here at KICC to launch a bold vision to transform the delivery of government services in Kenya,” President Ruto said. “Today, we return to celebrate this milestone—a reflection of our commitment to creating a connected, efficient, and equitable system of public service delivery.”
According to the Head of State, the E-Citizen platform now hosts 22,515 government services for 30 million users, which has resulted in significant increased government revenue.
President Ruto emphasised how the platform has reduced inefficiencies, delays, and bureaucratic red tape that had previously hampered public service delivery.
“From the comfort of your home and with just a mobile phone, you can renew a driving license, register a business, or apply for a marriage certificate,” he said.
“Tasks that once took weeks of travel, paperwork, and endless follow-ups now take minutes, if not seconds.”
The President emphasised the platform's profound impact on people's daily lives, citing examples of Kenyans who no longer have to travel long distances or endure frequent delays to access essential services.
He also stated that the platform has helped to create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and give many people hope.
“E-Citizen is not just a digital service delivery platform—it represents a paradigm shift that has redefined public service delivery in Kenya,” he said.
President Ruto also praised Kenya's growing reputation as a global leader in digital innovation, revealing that other countries have approached Kenya about benchmarking opportunities.
“The success of E-Citizen has propelled Kenya onto the global stage as a trailblazer in harnessing digital technology,” he said. “We are proud to partner with others in their transformation journeys, sharing the lessons and insights we have gained.”
He also stressed the importance of staying current with technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence (AI). “AI is the next frontier,” he said. “It offers opportunities to reimagine service delivery, enhance transparency, and create smarter systems. Imagine an AI-powered chatbot on E-Citizen providing instant solutions to inquiries or proactively addressing citizens’ needs—this is the future we are building.”
According to the Head of State, his administration intends to expand Kenya's digital infrastructure, including investments in the national fibre optic network and policies that will make smartphones and data more affordable.
He urged ministries, departments, and agencies to continue embracing digital transformation while recognising those who excelled in revenue generation and service delivery.
“As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to innovation and adaptation in the digital economy,” he said. “The dream of a digital Kenya is no longer an aspiration; it is our reality.”
