27-year-old man drowns while swimming at a waterfall in Kirinyaga
According to witnesses, including Patrick Muchoki, four friends were swimming together on Wednesday around 3 p.m. when the incident occurred.
"We were all enjoying ourselves, as we’ve swum here before, but suddenly, our friend Peter Muhia, 27, cried out for help. Despite our efforts, we couldn’t save him," Muchoki recounted.
Family members, led by Muhia’s aunt, Joyce Wangui, have been camped by the river, expressing concern over the dangers posed by the volume of water near Wanyiba Falls, particularly for those unfamiliar with the area.
"We are pleading for assistance to recover Peter’s body so we can give him a proper burial," Wangui said.
Peter Muhia’s brother, Billy Muhia, shared the family’s growing despair.
"We’ve been searching near Wanyiba Falls, but with fading hope. My aunt even stayed overnight here, but we’ve already reported the matter to Kiamaciri Police Station," Billy said.
Residents highlighted that this is not the first tragedy at Wanyiba Falls.
On March 18, 2024, the body of an army officer was discovered by locals who had come to fetch water.
