On Wednesday morning, all cardinals arrived at the Vatican's Sistine Chapel in Rome to begin the ritual, known as a conclave, that will elect the new Pope.

The conclave is a traditional process set to elect a new pope. 133 cardinals will continue to vote until they obtain a two-thirds majority.

Two stoves have been installed in the chapel, one for burning the votes and one for burning the special blends of chemicals to produce either the black or white smoke.

Following the elections, the elected Pope will move into the Room of Tears or the Crying room, where he will change into his papal cassock and one of the three robes in different sizes before appearing on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica as Pope for the first time.

The voting process is expected to conclude between 15 to 20 days of the first day of voting.

Below is a timeline of the events ahead of the election of a new pope.
