20% of Kenyans want CS Kindiki to replace DP Gachagua if impeached - Poll
A
majority of Kenyans, at 60%, do not know who they would want to replace Deputy
President Rigathi Gachagua should he be impeached.
An
Infotrak research shows that 20% of Kenyans polled prefer Interior Cabinet
Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki to replace DP Gachagua, should he be removed
from office next week, when the Senate sits to hear his impeachment motion.
Of
the 1,000 respondents interviewed, 5% supported Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru
and Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi to take over the job.
Both
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro tied at 4%, while
former Prime Minister Raila Odinga got 2% support.
The
report however indicates that 73% of Kenyans are not happy with the way the
trajectory the country is on under President William Ruto’s administration.
Johvine Wanyingo, Research Manager, Infotrak, said: “Most
of them (Kenyans) listed expertise and experience as the reasons why they chose
their candidates, with Kindiki leading in this area.”
A
programme drawn by the Senate Clerk shows that DP Gachagua will on Thursday,
October 17th, have four hours from 9am-1pm to present his evidence against the
impeachment grounds, and another session in the afternoon for
cross-examination.
During
the period, Gachagua’s lawyers will also have a chance to call witnesses to the
stand, who he believes will help to save his job. His legal team says they have
several witnesses lined up but did not disclose their names.
After
his presentation, Senators will have a chance to question and seek
clarifications from the DP, before ushering in his team to give their last
submissions for an hour.
The
National Assembly team will also have a similar period to give their closing
remarks. The voting session is expected to kick off at around 7:30pm.
