12 senior Kamiti Prison wardens charged over 2021 terrorism inmates' escape
In a ruling at the Kahawa court, Principal Prosecution Counsels James Machirah, Ken Amwayi, Harrison Kiarie, and Gideon Kiprono presented evidence that established a prima facie case against the accused.
The escape took place on November 14, 2021, when three terrorism convicts—Musharraf Abdalla, Mohamed Ali Abikar, and Joseph Juma—managed to break out of GK Kamiti Maximum Prison. At the time of the escape, the inmates were serving sentences of 42, 22, and 15 years, respectively.
Additionally, one of the officers is also facing charges for allegedly organizing a meeting in support of a terrorist group. The officer is accused of facilitating the movement of the terrorism convicts from Cell 2 to Cell 6 before the escape occurred.
The case is set to be mentioned again on January 13, 2025, for further directions and to set dates for the defense hearing.
