100 phones were stolen during Madaraka Day celebration in Homa Bay

More than 100 phones were stolen at the Raila Odinga Stadium during the 62nd Madaraka Day celebration. 

Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem says 2 suspects in the robberies have been arrested and at least 12 phones had been recovered by Sunday evening.

Most of the phones were stolen at night as large crowd were entering the venue of the national celebration. 

At entry points, the criminals would cause commotion that made people move from left to right and during the process, they stole phones, wallets and other valuable items.

Besides members of the public, journalists were also targeted in the theft, Nation Media Group Homa Bay Correspondent Gorge Odiwuor lost his mobile phone at the gate while another journalist lost a laptop as he was entering the stadium.

The two suspects were arrested by police in connection to the theft of mobile phones, money and other valuable items after they were found in possession of 12 phones and a wallet.

Koilem states that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is handling the matter and encouraged people who lost their phones to report to the station.
