Royal wedding: A Black American affair

The royal wedding was watched across the globe with fans praising Meghan Markle for bringing a ‘Black-American touch’ to the ceremony.

Meghan, now the Duchess of Sussex, is of mixed race and renowned for her feminist stance on issues as well as her role in the legal TV drama Suits.

On Saturday, she made an unprecedented move by walking alone into the church moments before Prince Charles joined her on the aisle.

However, what captured the audience most was the outstanding number of Black-American guests for the first time in the history of the British empire.

The guest list was a colorful mix of different people from across the racial divide.

They include renowned TV show host Oprah Winfrey; Indian actress and winner of Miss World 2000, Priyanka Chopra; tennis sensation Serena Williams, Suits co-star Gina Torres and actor Idris Elba.

Bishop Michael Curry was trending on Twitter after he gave what was termed a powerful sermon, mentioning Martin Luther King Jr. and slavery in America, Reuters reported.

Also of keen interest was Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the first black musician to win the BBC Young Musician of the year Award in 2016.

The 19-year-old who at one time featured on Britain’s Got Talent thrilled the audience with his cello performance.

An all Black choir also became a big hit after singing a rendition of the famous song Stand By Me.
