How the short-sleeved puffer jacket became a Kenyan political fashion item
What do Deputy President William Ruto, Raila
Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi and Polycarp Igathe all have in common with the fun-loving,
beer-imbibing, road trip-loving Kenyan man?
Calm down, bring down your blood pressure and

The short-sleeve puffer jacket has been
occupying space in many wardrobes across the globe for years.
In Kenya, it is also popular though it has
gained certain notoriety as it is associated with the “Vasha guys” who love out
of town spree - mostly to Naivasha - on weekends and are always with a beer on
one hand and a cigarette on the other.
When you see a man wearing one, ladies are
usually asked to flee to the nearest forest or church.
But that did little to dampen its popularity,
if anything, it made it even more popular.
Then politicians loved them so much that they
turned it into a political fashion statement.
The heated and murky campaign trails in Kenya
require one to be well equipped for a day of dancing, climbing on top of heavy
duty vehicles, and when necessary – be ready to flee.
With top gear campaigns ongoing as the August
9 polls fast approaches, Kenyan politicians have proven to have a similar
starter pack for rallies and in-person meetings.
A sneak peak on their videos and photos show
one common thing - a sleeveless puffer jacket that they like to wear.
Popularly referred as the Gilet, the half
jacket is a unique accessory that is very wearable, and can be added or
subtracted from one’s outfit much easily.
All the politicians have gone a notch higher
and branded the half jackets, using them not only to keep warm but also
advertise themselves.
Over the years, the gilet was not really
considered a cool outfit, but thanks to designers, it is now a go-to outfit.
The jacket is light, offers warmth and also
can offer storage for one’s personal belongings.
Here are politicians who have been spotted with the jacket that is an all-season fashion apparel.
