Dr. Mwaki noted that chemical peels are commonly sought for addressing various skin concerns, including acne scars, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. However, she advises caution. “It’s crucial to understand the potential side effects before opting for this procedure,” she stressed.

The dermatologist warns against purchasing over-the-counter chemical peel products without prior consultation with a qualified specialist. "These treatments can be quite potent,” she stated. “While they are gaining popularity in Kenya for the promise of 'new skin,' it is important to consider individual skin types, acne severity, and other factors.”

Before undergoing a chemical peel, some patients may need to follow a pre-treatment skincare regimen for two to four weeks to enhance results and reduce potential side effects. Dr. Mwaki emphasized that even a slight error in application or using incorrect chemical concentrations could lead to lasting skin damage.

Potential side effects of chemical peels include redness, swelling, and a burning or itching sensation, which are generally temporary and subside as the skin heals. However, more severe complications can occur, such as infections—often due to inadequate post-treatment care.

Dr. Mwaki warned that improper application and lack of sun protection after a peel may worsen these issues, potentially leading to scarring or delayed healing. “The depth of the peel also influences recovery; for instance, deep peels may require up to seven days for initial side effects to diminish,” she explained.

Additionally, changes in skin pigmentation, such as hyperpigmentation or hypo-pigmentation, are common. Variability in melanin production can result in patches of skin that appear lighter or darker than the individual's natural tone.

Dr. Mwaki also noted that contact dermatitis is the most prevalent allergic reaction associated with chemical peels. This condition often results from excessive use, high concentrations of chemicals, or insufficient skin preparation.
