'Comte de Beaumont!' The French name of this dam deep in Ruiru has Kenyans asking questions

The Comte de Beaumont Dam in Ruiru, Kiambu County

A tweet by Tatu City, a 5,000-acre modern city and swathing expanse of homes and businesses has left Kenyans with blisters on their tongues after struggling to pronounce a dam with a very French name in its environs.

Tatu City, in which Kofinaf Residences is domiciled, boasts of an exclusive dam named, we kid you not, Comte de Beaumont Dam.

The dam, according to the tweet, is an "ever-present water reservoir fed by the perennial waters of the Mukuyu and Gaia Rivers."

"Kofinaf Residences have exclusive access to Comte de Beaumont Dam, whose ever-present water is the essence of life for the rich red soil of Tatu City," the tweet reads.

"Beaumont Dam and its shores are your private nature reserve with diverse wildlife on your doorstep."

Whilst the entire idea might sound idyllic to a potential resident, Kenyans had a hard time wrapping their minds around a dam with such an intricately-foreign name found smack in the middle of Kiambu bushes.

'Comte de Beaumont', the dam's name, is believed to have been derived from a man with the same name - a former International Olympic Committee honorary member. He died in 2002.

Under the tweet, Kenyans left tens of dissatisfied comments asking the facility to rename the local dam and poking fun at the odd name.

Twitter user @MonyqueXO started the debate off with a fire tweet; "A French name for a dam deep in Ruiru is some craziness 🤣🤣 Even if it’s colonialism, English?"

Another Twitter user @pmuoge hilariously tried to make sense of why they chose that name tweeting "Because owning a luxury speed boat on a dam called Gítima-iní won't sell Non?"

Another Twitter user @Chris_Ngaruthi said; "The former President of French Olympics Authority? Why are you having a French named dam deep in Kikuyuland? This should be named Gicharu, Ng'ang'a or Waitherero Dam!"

Another user @Kennedy ranted, "Ati comte de what? Tatu dam would have sufficed...Or is it not European enough, homeguards descendants?"

@K3n_Munene said the reason behind the name is the target audience. "Aki ama we are not the target audience because....I know my people very well....we struggled with carry 4 sasa hii comte..."

After the dust has settled, one thing will remain for sure - Kiambu County's dams have a nose for the news.
