This is according to a report by Mwelekeo Insights that sought to understand how young Nairobi women perceive marriage in line with different religious beliefs, educational backgrounds and regional variations.
The survey sampled 2,687 Nairobi women aged 18-30 and found that 59 per cent of respondents believed marriage was not necessary for a fulfilling life, as many cited personal achievements and independence as key factors for a successful life.
Similarly, 80 per cent prioritised financial stability and career growth over marriage in their personal aspirations.
Of these, highly educated and employed women were more inclined to deprioritise marriage compared to those with lower education levels.
Consequently, 60 per cent of Nairobi women expressed the belief that marriage would negatively impact their freedom and hence will not prefer to walk down the aisle. In contrast, 25 per cent saw it as a positive change while 15 per cent felt neutral.
In terms of religion, 53 per cent believed that religious beliefs influenced their views on marriage while 33 per cent pointed out that it played a minimal role. On the other hand, 14 per cent claimed it had no impact.
The survey indicated a significant shift in attitudes towards marriage among young Nairobi women.
"While marriage remains a culturally significant institution, evolving aspirations related to career growth, financial independence, and personal freedom are reshaping traditional perspectives," the report read in part.
