The 'Look between X and Y on your keyboard' trend is confusing people online. Here's how it all started.

Despite its cryptic nature, this meme has captured the attention of netizens worldwide, sparking curiosity, speculation and even anxiety.

Originating from a meme shared on 4Chan in May 2021, the concept is deceptively simple. The original post featured a character from the anime series K-On, accompanied by the directive to "look between t and o on your key bored" (sic).

Upon closer examination, users discovered the letters Y, U and I, spelling out "Yui," a character from the show. 

Since then, this meme has evolved into what is known as a snowclone - a template allowing for the substitution of certain words or phrases. 

Over the last 24 hours or so, social media users, especially on X, have seized upon this format to highlight the initial letters of beloved characters, celebrities, or public figures, often with humorous intent.

Now, users are using the trend to create silly conversations and to basically troll others online as they ask them to refer to a particular letter (or letters) on their keyboard to decipher a certain hidden message.

In most cases, the supposed message is actually a senseless bunch of letters which leave one even more confused - and understandably angry.

Some, however, make some little sense.

For instance, lots of the posts on X will tell you to look between 'H' and 'L' buttons on your keyboard which would mean your eyes fall upon 'JK', which means 'Just Kidding'.

Another instance;

Girl: Who is the one person you love most in the whole world?

Boy: Look between 'Y' and 'I' on your keyboard...

So viral has the trend become that even notable celebrities, news channels, X accounts and media jaggernauts are using it.

Unlike other trends, this one, however, has been met with much derision and contempt from online users. Most are calling it silly and downright unintelligent.

"I feel like I need to log out of Twitter until this keyboard trend dies," one person said.

"Bro, I'm so tired of keyboard s**t on my TL," someone else commented, while another encouraged people to 'look between SHUT and THE F UP on your keyboard!'"

Another exasperated user, commenting under one such tweet, said, "Where is World Health Organization when you need them? This is becoming a global pandemic!"
