The Comeback of MTV Shuga Mashariki

With two episodes of the first season having already been aired, the show is turning heads with compelling storylines and an ensemble of talented actors who make up the main cast. 

A mix of fresh faces and talented professionals who have had their hands in the game include Serah Wanjiru playing the role of Nyokabi, Basil Mungai who will play as Salaton , Matthew Ngugi taking part in the show as Eric, Fridah Mumbe , Subterranea’s Makena Kahuha stepping into the show as Zena, Julie Brenda, Fatuma Gichuru  taking on the role of Wendo, radio host Mariam Bishar as Hanifa and newcomer Wilson Muchemi cast as Odek among other talented stars in the cast. 

The show is part of a 5 year mass media program established in 2024 with the intent of challenging norms that perpetuate gender inequality in Kenya known as Surround Sound Kenya.

The show’s team also includes three accomplished Kenyan directors; Likarion Wainaina, June Ndinya and Mkaiwawi Mwakaba. 

Wainaina is known for having been a key element in directing Kenya’s first superhero film Super Modo as well as Kenya’s first sci-fi film in 2024 called Subterranea centered around eight participants in a psychological experiment gone wrong while Ndinya’s works include the coming of age drama premiered in 2024 known as Prefects and Flash Squad, a teen cybersecurity series and Mwakaba, a film editor known for her editing role in popular Kenyan shows; Nairobi Half Life and Country Queen has since transitioned into directing with works such as Showmax-based steamy comedy drama 4Play and Makosa ni Yangu. 

The show airs weekly on three different platforms on different days; Wednesdays on Citizen TV at 11pm EAT, 9pm on Tuesdays at BET Africa DStv Channel 129 and on their official YouTube channel, MTV Shuga with episodes dropping on Wednesdays at 8pm EAT.
