Reggae legends Alborosie and Don Campbell are set to headline
a concert in Kenya next weekend in partnership with the country’s deaf
community.
The two will perform at the first edition of the ‘Reggae with
a Cause’ concert that is set to take place at KICC’s Tsavo Ballroom on February
15, 2025.
The event will also feature a myriad of Kenyan stars among
them Nazizi and Wyre, as well as a lineup of leading and emerging Kenyan DJs.
The organizers, in a statement to newsrooms, said the
partnership with the deaf community will ensure that the marginalized groups
takes over the key aspects of the event such as drinks and sales.
In addition, all proceeds from the event will be directed towards
supporting the Kwale Deaf Centre and its critical programs.
“What sets this event apart is its unique collaboration with
Kenya’s Deaf community. The event aims to raise awareness about this often
marginalized group by partnering with the Kwale Deaf Centre, a vital community
hub for deaf people in southeast Kenya, with outreach programs extending to
areas like Kibera in Nairobi,” read the statement.
“Deaf people will play a central role in the event. All food
and drink sales will be managed by Deaf vendors, and event attendees will have
the chance to order refreshments using Kenyan Sign Language. Deaf instructors
will be present to guide concertgoers in learning the relevant signs, fostering
an inclusive and interactive experience. This initiative will not only enhance
awareness but also challenge misconceptions about Deafness in Kenya.”
The statement added: “In many parts of Kenya, there is a lack
of understanding about Deafness; it is often mistaken for a mental disability
or, in some remote areas, even considered a curse. The organizations behind
this event are committed to changing this narrative. Through this initiative,
we aim to showcase that Deaf people are capable, talented, and integral members
of society.”
